GLENDO, WY – It was 1:12 p.m., August 17, 2017, when the sun disappeared behind the moon, making it
seem like midnight in a very few communities in the United States. One of the towns that was in the
direct center of the total solar eclipse that afternoon was Glendo, a tiny municipality in eastern
Wyoming.
It was that day town leaders realized they were missing some much-needed infrastructure. Glendo’s
internet capabilities were sorely lacking. Had reliable high-speed internet access been available, many
more people would have been likely to head for Glendo to watch the eclipse. Reliable internet access is
necessary to do business in the 21st century, and Glendo did not have it.
But Glendo’s internet problems are about to not just change, they are about to go away.
The town is the recipient of a $2.3 million Capital Project Funds grant. Visionary Broadband will add their
own funds to that and build a state-of-the-art, fiber-based internet network, a project that will provide
service to about 300 homes and businesses in and around Glendo and Glendo Reservoir.
As a result of the Visionary project, Glendo will leap ahead to a future-proofed fiber option that is
second-to-none and rivals service found in larger cities around the nation.
Visionary, a Wyoming-based company, is the industry leader in building high-speed, fiber-based systems
in rural and remote locations. It has a history of successfully providing internet service to small, often
hard-to-get-to communities in the Intermountain West. It operates in Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico
and Montana. The CPF grant comes from the American Rescue Plan, a part of the federal government’s
coronavirus recovery efforts.
There are no more solar eclipses headed for Glendo, but one never knows when some other event might
bring hordes of people to eastern Wyoming. When that happens Glendo will be prepared.
